Scientific name: Calycacanthus magnusianus K. Schum.
Family: Acanthaceae.
Genus: Calycacanthus — until recently considered monotypic (i.e. only this species), but a new species (Calycacanthus insularis) was described in 2023, expanding the genus.
Native range: Papua New Guinea and adjacent islands.
Growth habit:
A shrub or small tree. In the wild, it can reach up to ~10–15 meters tall.
Flowers / Inflorescence:
Inflorescences are in pedunculate thyrses (i.e. branched cluster structure) located in leaf axils of younger growth, or in axils of leaf scars on older branches or trunks. Number of flowers per cluster up to ~13.
Flower tubes are tubular, pinkish to salmon-coloured. Length of the corolla (tube) ~3.8–5 cm.
